Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI VC USD Pro Zoom Lens Availability AnnouncedTamron just announced availability for their recently announced 70-200mm f/2.8 image-stabilized zoom lens. The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD telephoto zoom lens was unveiled at the Photokina tradeshow in Germany, in September. It’s a large aperture, professional telephoto zoom lens, featuring Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) optical image stabilization and Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) auto focus motor. Tamron claims it’s the world’s smallest full-sized 70-200mm zoom lens with an f/2.8 aperture, optical image stabilization and a high-speed ultrasonic auto focus motor.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 lens market is a competitive one. The 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens is a standard piece of gear for pro sports, event, outdoor, travel and portrait photographers and every serious photographer should have one. Tamron’s new SP 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD zoom adds a new, affordable option for pros and serious photographers who want a full-featured, pro-quality telephoto zoom at a reasonable price. With a US $1499 sticker price, the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD zoom lens offers the same features and performance as the Nikon and Canon image-stabilized 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, but for about $1000 less. As far as the size claim goes, the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD zoom lens is lighter than the Nikon and Canon equivalents – but not by much (comparison based on specs provided on manufacturer Web sites). All three lenses are about 3.4 inches in diameter but at 7.7 inches in length, the Tamron is 1/10th of an inch (2.3mm) shorter than the Canon and about half an inch shorter than the Nikon. That’s not really enough to make a practical difference but it is enough of a difference for them to make the claim that the 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD zoom has “the most compact design in its class.” It also weighs slightly less than the Nikon and Canon lenses – but only by about half an ounce (20g) – not enough to really matter.

The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 DI VC USD telephoto zoom lens for Canon DSLRs (APS-C and full-frame) is scheduled to be in stores on November 30th (2012). Nikon and Sony versions will follow. The suggested retail price is US $1499 and includes a lens hood and detachable tripod mount.
