Canon Featured News Point and Shoot

Canon has added another built-in Wi-Fi camera to their PowerShot point-and-shoot line with their new flagship pocket superzoom, the SX280 HS. Besides built-in Wi-Fi with Android and iOS mobile apps so you can share from almost anywhere, the Canon PowerShot SX280 HS has a 20x (25-500mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, full HD video at 60 FPS, built-in GPS, PASM shooting modes, improved auto focus performance, and ECO mode to preserve battery life.

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS Key Features And Specs:

  • 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor
  • 20x 25-500mm f/3.5-6.8 optical zoom lens
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with free Canon CameraWindow app for Android and iOS
  • New DIGIC 6 processing
  • 1920 x 1080 full HD video at 60 and 30 FPS
  • Improved low-light performance up to ISO 6400
  • PASM shooting modes
  • Up to 14 FPS full-resolution burst
  • Built-in GPS
  • Intelligent IS
  • 3-inch 461k-dot LCD display
  • ECO Mode for 30% better battery life

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS appears to be using the same 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that they’ve been using for a couple of years now. That sensor has proven to have a good balance between resolution and low light performance and with the brand new DIGIC 6 processor Canon has increased the sensitivity to ISO 6400. The DIGIC 6 processing also allows the camera to shoot full-resolution bursts as fast as 14 frames per second. In case you don’t know, that’s fast. Really fast. Faster that a professional digital SLR.

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS

Between the machine gun burst speed, improved auto focus and 60 FPS full HD video, the SX280 HS looks like a seriously great pocket camera for skateboarders, mountain bikers, professional hula hoop competitors and anyone else who has a need for speed. The PASM shooting modes ensure you can freeze the action too – no matter how fast. Not a manual shooter? No worries – the SX280 HS has Canon’s Smart AUTO mode, which instantly analyzes a scene and chooses the best of 58 pre-programmed shooting modes. The built-in Wi-Fi and mobile apps allow you to wirelessly transfer your photos and videos to your Smart Phone or tablet so you can Instagram from almost anywhere. If you’re wondering why you’d want to use the SX280 HS instead of your phone for Instagram photos – does your phone have a 20x optical zoom lens and full manual exposure controls? Mine doesn’t.

Full disclosure: I bought the SX230 HS when it came out a couple of years ago and I think the SX280 HS looks like a very worthy upgrade. A whole bunch of great new pocket superzoom cameras have been announced this year and it’s honestly going to be tough to choose one. But I have learned to trust Canon’s point-and-shoot image quality and with the built-in Wi-Fi and 14 FPS burst, the SX280 HS is going to be hard for me to resist.

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS should be available this month (April, 2013). It comes in either red or black and the suggested retail price is US $329.99.
