Canon PowerShot SX280 HS Adds Built-In Wi-Fi & 14 FPS Speed To 20x Pocket Superzoom

Canon has added another built-in Wi-Fi camera to their PowerShot point-and-shoot line with their new flagship pocket superzoom, the SX280 HS. Besides built-in Wi-Fi with Android and iOS mobile apps so you can share from almost anywhere, the Canon PowerShot SX280 HS has a 20x (25-500mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, full HD video at 60 FPS, built-in GPS, PASM shooting modes, improved auto focus performance, and ECO mode to preserve battery life.

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS appears to be using the same 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that they’ve been using for a couple of years now. That sensor has proven to have a good balance between resolution and low light performance and with the brand new DIGIC 6 processor Canon has increased the sensitivity to ISO 6400. The DIGIC 6 processing also allows the camera to shoot full-resolution bursts as fast as 14 frames per second. In case you don’t know, that’s fast. Really fast. Faster that a professional digital SLR.

If you’re wondering why you’d want to use the SX280 HS instead of your phone for Instagram photos – does your phone have a 20x optical zoom lens and full manual exposure controls? Mine doesn’t.

Full disclosure: I bought the SX230 HS when it came out a couple of years ago and I think the SX280 HS looks like a very worthy upgrade. A whole bunch of great new pocket superzoom cameras have been announced this year and it’s honestly going to be tough to choose one. But I have learned to trust Canon’s point-and-shoot image quality and with the built-in Wi-Fi and 14 FPS burst, the SX280 HS is going to be hard for me to resist.
