Two days after it was announced, Canon has rolled back the most recent EOS 5D Mark II firmware update (2.0.3), which upgraded some of the camera’s HD video features. According to the firmware download page on the Canon Japan Web site, there’s a problem with the customizable User Settings (C1 / C2 / C3). If the User Setting modes are programmed to use the new “Sound Recording: Manual” option, when the camera is turned off (including Auto power off), the 5D Mark II will lose all audio capability.
Until the problem is resolved, Canon has removed firmware update 2.0.3 from their Web site. If you’ve already updated your 5D Mark II firmware to version 2.0.3, make sure that the sound option in User Settings C1, C2 and C3 is set to auto. As soon as this problem is fixed Canon will release new firmware.
The recent Canon EOS 5D Mark II firmware update significantly enhanced the video capabilities of the camera. Hopefully a fix will be available soon.
