Pentax has put together a pretty serious list of features and performance specs with the K-x. Even though it’s packaged in the same body as last year’s K2000, the K-x looks like a great camera for entry-level enthusiasts or pros who need a solid, well-spec’d backup camera. And with a $650 price tag that includes a lens, it’s also a hell of a bargain. Image quality is always critical and we’ll have to wait and see how usable it actually is at the high sensitivity settings. There’s also the question of availability. We haven’t been able to get our hands on any Pentax digital SLRs for testing since the K200D (Read our Pentax K200D pro review). That makes it hard not to wonder whether Pentax is having trouble producing enough cameras. My first 35mm SLR was a Pentax so there’s a soft spot in my heart for the brand. But I need to actually use the cameras if I’m going to form a real opinion about them.

The Pentax K-x should be available next month (October 2009) and will be available in black or white as well as limited edition blue and red versions. You’ll be able to buy it with the smc Pentax DA L 18-55mm kit lens for $649.95; with the Pentax DA L 18-55mm lens and smc Pentax DA L 50-200mm zoom lens for $749.95; or with the smc Pentax DA L 18-55mm lens and the brand new smc Pentax DA L 55-300mm zoom lens for $849.95. Pentax is taking pre-orders now for the white and black body kits.
