Pentax K7 Digital SLR Announced

May 20th, 2009 by Photo-John

New Pentax K7 Digital SLR It’s been over a year since Pentax introduced the K20D, their current top-of-the-line digital SLR body. Even though they did make a lot of announcements in 2008, my impression has been that things have been a little on the quiet side for Pentax in the past year. They need something big to bring the buzz back. The new 14.6-megapixel Pentax K7 DSLR should do that. Pentax system owners should be very happy and other digital SLR owners might be a little jealous. It may have taken a while for Pentax to produce a new camera. But in July, $1299 will buy you a whole lot of Pentax-badged digital SLR. And yeah - it’s got video.

Waterproof Digital Cameras At PMA 2009

March 9th, 2009 by Photo-John

2009 PMA Waterproof Digital CamerasOne of the themes at PMA this year was waterproof point-and-shoot cameras. It seems the camera makers have all decided the time has come for underwater digital cameras. For the past few years, underwater point-and-shoot digital cameras have been the exclusive domain of Olympus and Pentax. Pentax got the ball rolling back in 2005 with their 5-megapixel OptioWP. Then Olympus introduced the Stylus 720 SW, which was shockproof as well as waterproof. Both companies have had several updates since they first started making underwater cameras and depth ratings have gone from 5 feet to over 30 feet. But until recently, there wasn’t any other competition (with the exception of Ricoh’s 10-megapixel G600, which isn’t readily available in the US). That has decidedly changed now, and the features and performance of waterproof cameras have matured as well. Underwater cameras used to be pretty basic point-and-shoots but the new models we saw at PMA are no-compromise, high-performance cameras that also happen to be waterproof.

Limited Edition White Pentax K2000 DSLR Kit

December 16th, 2008 by Photo-John

Pentax K2000 Digital SLRPentax has announced a new K2000 DSLR kit. They’re going out on a limb here and breaking some rules with a white body instead of the usual tough-guy black or techy silver. If it were available right now, I’d be obligated to call it the White Christmas Special. Unfortunately, I’m denied that opportunity since it won’t actually be in stores until February.
