Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Camera Review

Nikon Coolpix AW100 Waterproof Camera ReviewThe Nikon Coolpix AW100 is Nikon’s first rugged, waterproof digital camera. It can handle drops of about 5 feet, it’s waterproof to 33 feet and it’s also freezeproof – perfect for the kind of rough, outdoor funtography that I love! It’s got a 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, full HD video, a 5x zoom lens, 3-inch LCD display and built-in GPS. It even has a nice fast burst mode – 7.1 frames per second for 3 frames. All-in-all, it’s a very compelling little outdoor fun camera that’s ready for pretty much anything. And since I love playing outdoors in the dirt and snow, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one for review.

Nikon’s New 24-Megapixel D3200 Digital SLR

Nikon’s New 24-Megapixel D3200 Digital SLRA few days ago, Nikon announced the D3200, a new entry-level digital SLR with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Yup, you read that right – a 24.2-megapixel entry level DSLR. That’s 10 megapixels more than the 14-megapixel D3100. Besides the 24.2-megapixel DX-format (APS-C) sensor, the Nikon D3200 also has a faster 4 frames per second burst rate, increased ISO 6400 sensitivity, full HD video with manual exposure control and continuous auto focus, a 3-inch 921k-dot LCD display, and a Guide Mode to help less experienced photographers get pro quality photos with all kinds of subjects.

Nikon Announces Fast New 28mm f/1.8 FX-Format Prime Lens

Nikon Announces Fast New 28mm f/1.8 FX-Format Prime LensLast week, Nikon announced a new wide-angle FX-format (full-frame) prime lens, the AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.8G. The large f/1.8 aperture makes it easier to shoot photos and video in low light and use shallow depth-of-field for selective focus. The built-in Silent Wave Motor (SWM) means no distracting auto focus noise in movie mode. On a DX-format digital SLR (APS-C sensor), the 28mm focal length will be effectively converted to 42mm, making it a nice choice for photographers who want a fast, “normal” prime lens.

Nikon D4 Studio Sample Photos

Nikon D4 Studio Sample PhotosNikon sent me a D4 for review last week and you’ll find a full set of high-res studio sample photos shot at all ISO settings, below. I’ve used it just enough to get a feel for it and I am impressed. I shot a whole bunch of low light family stuff on Easter and I think the photos look great. The studio sample photos confirm my initial impressions. I think the D4 is useable up to ISO 6400 and I wouldn’t hesitate to go up to ISO 12,800 if I needed to. It does start to get a bit gritty above ISO 6400, though. And of course, beauty and quality are in the eye of the beholder. I shoot sports and events where some noise is acceptable, depending on the conditions. Wedding and landscape photographers might not want to go over ISO 3200, where noise starts to get noticeable if you look closely.

Nikon D800 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark III Hands-On Video Intro

Nikon D800 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark III Hands-On Video IntroLike everyone else out there, I’ve been anxious to get my hands on the Nikon D800 and Canon EOS 5D Mark III, the latest and greatest full-frame professional digital SLRs. Instead of waiting to get official review cameras from Nikon and Canon, I went straight to my local pro shop, Pictureline, and had their man, Nick Gilson, do a hands-on intro and comparison for me. I do plan to do full pro reviews for both cameras. But for those of you who want to see them and learn more about them right now, the video below should do the trick. I’m also assembling some first impressions material to add to this page, including high-res sample photos that you can compare back-to-back.

Nikon D800 Announced – 36-Megapixel Multimedia HD-SLR

Nikon D800 Announced – 36-Megapixel Multimedia HD-SLRThe boat this camera came in on must have sunk as soon as it reached the harbor because it was a seriously leaky vessel. However, you never know how much of what the rumor sites say is true until the announcement is official. Well, the Nikon D800 “Multimedia HD-SLR” is now official. The rumors were actually pretty much right on target this time. In a departure from previous strategy, the D800 gets a totally new, Nikon-designed 36.3-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor. The positioning of the D800 is very similar to that of the D700. It’s a more affordable full-frame camera than the new Nikon D4 and it inherits a lot of the same technology but without the speed or battle-worthy build. The D800 has the same 51-point auto focus system and EXPEED 3 image processing as the D4, 1080p HD Video, 3.2-inch 921k-dot LCD display – it even gets Nikon’s new 91k-pixel 3D Color Matrix Metering III system and corresponding Advanced Scene Recognition System. Where the D800 diverges from the D700 strategy is resolution. Instead of offering the same number of pixels as the D4, the D800 more than doubles the resolution of the D4 and triples the resolution of the D700. And of course, unlike the D700, which had no video capability, the D800 gets full HD video with a lot of pro-level perks, including manual exposure control.
