2008 PMA Tradeshow

January 31 to February 2 - Las Vegas

The annual Photo Marketing Association tradeshow took place on Thursday, January 31st through Saturday, February 2nd. PMA is the biggest camera and photography tradeshow in North America and takes place every spring. In 2007 there were nearly 700 exhibitors and over 20,000 attendees. It was in Las Vegas again this year so camera company execs, PR and marketing folks, as well as camera shop owners and employees had an excuse to get out of the office and party in Vegas for a few days.

Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, and Samsung introduced new digital SLR cameras at PMA this year. There were also new compact digital cameras, photo printers, camera bags, lenses, and even film-related photo gear to see! Tethered Olympus shooters now have Live View right on their computer. (New at PMA 2008).

Having a little fun with the shockproof and waterproof Olympus Stylus 1030 SW and Stylus 850 SW at PMA 2008. Whomever at Olympus came up with this display should get a bonus.

I dropped by to see what’s new with the Sanho Hyperdrive family, and found a new model on the stand. The new model is the COLORSPACE O on the left. Next is the hyperdrive colorspace, then the hyperdrive space and the HD80.

I thought my hyperdrive space was fast, the new COLORSPACE O will copy from memory cards even faster. Plus a load of useful features, while still fitting in my pocket. Orientation sensor for landsape/portrait, card scan and image recovery, calendar view in the browser.

I saw photos of a new model prototype; like the HD80 in form factor but with battery tray instead of loose AA batteries, with colour screen instead of mono, and with a HD tray to swap drives. I’ve always been a little nervous of putting all my eggs in one backup basket, and copy my files to the laptop each night. This swappable drive bay will let you make multiple backups without buying multiple hyperdrives.

Casio is to be commended for trying to go where no company, or camera, has gone before. The innovative Casio EX-F1 not only captures at full resolution for 60 frames per second, but it goes beyond just being fast by using that speed and buffer in unique ways to help the photographer capture the perfect shot. One example is a slow-motion display of the capture so the photographer can see the perfect composition and have time to depress the shutter before the next frame.

It will be very interesting to see how this camera is met by consumers this year as I think they have an unusual “value proposition” to sell to the market. Before we did the video below, Ms. Keklak told us about how Casio engineers sought to redefine what a digital camera could be with the EX-F1. I hope their marketing people find success helping the rest of us comprehend just what they’ve done. (Incidentally, I think she meant to say “zoom ring” in the video where she says “focus ring.”)
