Add Fujifilm to the list of camera makers who introduced a $199 rugged waterproof point-and -shoot camera at CES this year. The new Fujifilm FinePix XP60 improves on their previous entry-level rugged camera with a new 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, 60 frames per second full HD video, and an increased depth rating (increased from 16 to 20 feet) thanks to a new double locking system on the battery door. They also added a new dedicated Burst Mode Button next to the shutter release to make it really easy to access the camera’s 10 frames per second full resolution burst mode. The lens is a 5x 28-140mm (35mm equivalent) optical zoom complimented with sensor-shift image stabilization to minimize camera shake in low light and smooth out videos.

Of the recently announced affordable rugged, waterproof cameras, I think Fujifilm’s new XP60 looks the best. The 60 frames per second 720p HD video and 10 frames per second full resolution burst mode are high-end camera features and it’s a bit surprising to see them in a camera that sells for less than $200. I also really like the dedicated burst mode button on top of the camera. Being able to just press a different button to shoot an action sequence instead of having to go into a menu to change modes is going to make it a lot easier to capture spontaneous action photos. That’s inspired design and I love it! The 60 frames per second video means you can record and play back slow motion video of your kids, pets and friends in action. With all those great action shooting features, I think the Fujifilm FinePix XP60 is going to be my first recommendation for my mountain biker and ski buddies who want an inexpensive outdoor point-and-shoot camera. The XP60 gives you rugged reliability with serious action performance for such an inexpensive camera. It’s perfect for outdoor adventurers on a budget or a worry-free point-and-shoot to bang around the house and car.
The Fujifilm FinePix XP60 will be available in March of 2013 for a suggested retail price of US $199.95. It comes in four colors – red, black, green, yellow and blue.
