Casio comes out swinging with the world’s thinnest waterproof and shockproof digital camera. The 12-megapixel Casio EXILIM EX-G1 can be dropped up to seven feet (2.13 meters) and submerged ten feet (3 meters) underwater. The EX-G1 is the newest member of Casio’s rugged “G” line of electronics products, which began in 1983 with the shockproof G-Shock digital watch.

The new Canon PowerShot S90 showed up at my door last week. The S-Series cameras have been missing from the Canon PowerShot lineup for a few years. Essentially, the S-Series offers G-Series image quality and performance in a pocket-sized package. Like previous S-Series PowerShot digital cameras, the Canon S90 has the same 10-megapixel sensor as its big brother, the G11. For people who want G11 image quality on the trail, in their pocket, in the briefcase or in their purse, it’s the camera to have.

The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is one of the most recent introductions to the pocket superzoom camera category, as well one of the more interesting. Besides the 10x 27-270mm wide-angle zoom lens, the F70EXR also feature’s Fujifilm’s unique, new EXR sensor, which was designed to deliver great low-light image quality. The F70EXR was only announced a few weeks ago so I was pleased to see a user review appear so soon - especially such a positive and detailed review.

Thoughts on the Return of the S-Series

Apparently Canon has decided to re-enter the fray and stop watching Panasonic and Ricoh eat up the “pro-features-in-a-compact” market. Or maybe this is just wishful thinking getting the better of me, yet again. Nonetheless we have a potentially killer RAW-capable, 28-105mm, low-noise compact to look forward to from Canon. Canon’s new PowerShot S90 digital camera packs all the latest techno-goodness into a stylish, compact, all-black package. And have you noticed how, well, Leica-like the styling is? I’m sold on that, at least!

Casio is introducing two new 12-megapixel digital cameras, the Exilim Zoom EX-Z450 and Exilim Zoom EX-Z90. Along with the two new cameras, Casio is introducing a new feature, Intelligent AF. Intelligent AF is described as an expanded version of face detection that can identify and track subjects other than human faces. Both cameras also have a 720p HD movie mode and Casio’s Dynamic Photo function, which can create in-camera animations from still images.

Pentax adds to the growing number of outdoor and swimming pool-friendly digital camera with the new Optio WS80. The Pentax Optio WS80 is a 10-megapixel camera with a 5x internal zoom lens, 2.7-inch LCD, 720p HD video and it’s waterproof to a depth of 1.5 meters (approximately 5 feet).

The Optio P80 has the same 12.1-megapixel resolution as the P70 with a slightly wider 4x zoom lens, better 720p video capture, improved face detection and refined Auto-Tracking AF to help keep moving subjects in focus. The new Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the world’s first digital camera with a built-in digital projector. Capable of projecting photos and video up to 40 inches (1 m), the 12.1-megapixel S1000pj has a 5x wide-angle zoom lens (28-14 mm equivalent) with Nikon’s VR optical image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD display and a VGA movie mode.

Last night, Nikon announced a new iPhone-like point-and-shoot digital camera with a 3.5-inch touch-screen OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display. The new Nikon Coolpix S70 is a 12.1-megapixel camera with a 5x wide-angle zoom lens equipped with Nikon’s VR (Vibration Reduction) optical image stabilization system. The new 12.1-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 point-and-shoot camera has an 8x wide-angle Leica zoom lens. The new lens is only 3mm thick, allowing them to cram an incredible 25-200mm (35mm equivalent) optical zoom range into a truly pocket-sized camera.
