Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS, EF-S 15-85mm IS & EF-S 18-135mm IS Lenses

Three New Canon Lenses Along with the new EOS 7D announced last night, Canon is introducing three new lenses, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM with Hybrid IS Technology, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, and the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The two zooms are nice additions to Canon’s EF-S lens line, designed for APS-C sensor digital SLRs like the EOS 50D, the T1i/500D, and the new EOS 7D. They offer new flexibility for crop sensor Canon DSLR owners, increasing the zoom range on both the wide and telephoto ends of the spectrum.

Tamron 15x AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC MACRO Lens

Tamron AF18-270mm Di II VC Lens Official Press Release

Tamron Announces Second Vibration Compensation (VC) Lens With 15x Zoom Range

Tamron AF18-270mm Di II VC 15x Zoom LensHot on the heels of my review for Tamron’s very first Vibration Compensation (VC) image-stabilized lens (Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC Lens Pro Review), Tamron announces they’re working on a second VC lens. This is great news for photographers shooting with Nikon and Canon APS-C sensor digital SLRs. One of the things I said in my review of the Tamron AF28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC lens was that it would be nice to have a shorter, wider version for cameras like the Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D or the Nikon D60. Apparently Tamron’s designers were thinking ahead - because the 15x 18-270mm Di II VC lens is exactly what I was asking for. The 15x zoom will be roughly equivalent to a 28-420mm lens on a 35mm camera. And at 3.8-inches (101mm) it will actually be smaller than Tamron’s 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di or the Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens (see lens size comparison in the Tamron 28-300mm VC lens review). The Vibration Compensation image stabilization worked great on the AF28-300mm VC lens I tested and it’s exciting to see that more VC lenses are already in the works, even if they aren’t yet sure about pricing or when the new lens will be available.

Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D DSLR Preview

Canon EOS Rebel XSi - Much More Than A Beginner Camera

Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital SLR

Canon announced their latest entry-level digital SLR, the 12.2-megapixel EOS Rebel XSi, at the annual PMA tradeshow this January. Last week, when Adobe released the update for Lightroom 1.4.1 with support for the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, I decided to see if I could buy one. None of the big online camera dealers listed it as available. But my hunch proved right when I got lucky at my local big box electronics store and snatched up their only XSi kit. I have a mountain bike festival coming up in a week and rather than wait for Canon to send me an XSi, I figured I’d just buy one so I could test it at the bike event.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 Review

Panasonic’s new 7.2-megapixel Lumix DMC-TZ3 point-and-shoot digital camera is heavy on the features with a large 3-inch LCD display and a 10x Leica DC Vario-Elmar optical zoom lens with MEGA O.I.S. image stabilization. The 10x optical zoom lens puts the TZ3 in the superzoom category and it’s a bit larger than most pocket point-and-shoots. However, in spite of the big zoom, it’s still small enough to fit into your pocket.

  • Quiet on / off and zoom operation
  • Large, crisp, 3-inch LCD screen
  • Good user manual
  • Impressive 3 frames-per-second capture rate
  • Minimal shutter-lag
    Cons

  • Not really a pocket camera
  • Confusing menus

  • Too many buttons
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 - front and back

Introduction
The most impressive element of the Panasonic Lumix TZ3 digital camera is the 10x 28-280mm (35mm equivalent) Leica zoom lens. At 28mm on the wide end, it actually has a wide-angle aspect, something that isn’t common among compact digital cameras.. No one will be referring to the TZ3 as “cool” or “swanky” - this is a working-persons camera. But it does work well. I appreciated it during a newspaper work trip to Beijing, China where I needed a camera stealthier than the big digital SLR I usually use.
