October 22 - 24, 2009: The PDN PhotoPlus Expo tradeshow bills itself as “the most important event in the photo industry.” That might be overstating things a bit, but it is the largest and most important consumer photo tradeshow in North America. Every fall, photographers gather at the Javits Center in New York City where they get to take a closer look at new digital cameras, lenses, tripods, camera bags, software, studio lighting and more. There are also more than 100 photography workshops, covering everything from marketing your photography to improving all kinds of photography skills and techniques.

Redrock Micro announced a wide range of new accessories that significantly reduce weight and increase the options available to enhance video DSLRs. Some accesories include, carbon fiber rods that are 66% lighter than stainless steel rods, theEvent DSLR rig with the microBrace body pad for handheld with maximum stability, remote start/stop holder for Canon video DSLRs, the microLink4 “flat” support for DSLR battery grips, and the eyeSpy shouldermount DLSR rigs that now position the viewfinder more comfortably for run-and-gun style shooting. 
Fujifilm has announced a new collection of camera accessories for their Finepix digital camera line. Some items include an underwater housing, which can be used in depths up to 130 feet of water, for the FinePix F200EXR and an outdoor accessory kit for the FinePix Z33WP. The new items will be available May 2009. 
I discovered Professor Kobre’s Lightscoop during the Holidays while I was putting together our Cheap Gifts for Photographers guide. It was suggested as a possible fit and when I looked it up on the Web I was impressed enough to include it in the guide. Basically, the Lightscoop allows cameras with pop-up flashes and hot shoe mounts to bounce the flash off the ceiling for better indoor portraits. It’s a really easy and inexpensive solution for the generally poor quality of direct flash lighting.
