Fujifilm announced the new Remora Slave Flash Kit that is compatible with Fujifilm’s full range of digital compact cameras and underwater housings. The Remora Flash is not only suited to daytime diving, but its performance is also essential during night dives with a powerful guide number of 20. It also has an extra wide angle flash beam angle of 60 degrees so a bigger area can be illuminated underwater to meet the needs of both macro and wide-angle photography. The Remora Flash features manual light output range of 10% to 100%, so the amount of flash can be fine tuned to achieve a correct exposure for the perfect shot. It is depth rated to 55m/180 feet. Fujifilm has announced that their FinePix Real 3D system will become available in the U.S. today. The FinePix Real 3D system, that consists of the FinePix Real 3D W1 3D digital camera, the FinePix Real 3D V1 3D digital viewer, and 3D prints, is the first three dimensional digital imaging system that captures realistic 3D still photographs and movies. Fujifilm announced the FP-100B to their instant film product line, which is now available to the US market. The 4×5 black and white peel-apart sheet film is a large format photography solution ideal for exposure and composition tests, ID photos, medical & scientific applications, and image preview. It is a positive, “peel-apart” panchromatic material designed for camera back-incorporated photographic equipment and cameras that accept instant film packs. The FP-100B film has rich gradation, fine grain, and exceptional resolution, performs well in various lighting conditions, produces glossy finished photos with an image area of 3.5” x 4.5, and develops instantly in 30 seconds. The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is one of the most recent introductions to the pocket superzoom camera category, as well one of the more interesting. Besides the 10x 27-270mm wide-angle zoom lens, the F70EXR also feature’s Fujifilm’s unique, new EXR sensor, which was designed to deliver great low-light image quality. The F70EXR was only announced a few weeks ago so I was pleased to see a user review appear so soon - especially such a positive and detailed review.

Rugged Digital Cameras For Backpacking, Cycling, Boating And The Worksite
 
A whole bunch of new waterproof and shockproof digital cameras have become available since the spring of 2008, when this guide was originally published. I decided to update the article so it refers to the most current (as of August 2009) outdoor-friendly point-and-shoot digital cameras. These are cameras that have some level of moisture resistance and/or can take some physical abuse - cameras made for the beach, camping, fishing, skiing, etc. Right now Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, and Ricoh all offer at least one camera that fits somewhere in the waterproof, shockproof, outdoor point-and-shoot spectrum.

Digital cameras sure have come a long way in a few short years. Today, Fujifilm announced their newest J-Series digital camera, the 12-megapixel Fujifilm FinePix J38. The J38 offers compact style, features and 12 million pixels of resolution for less than $150. Five years ago any of would have been overjoyed to have a point-and-shoot camera like this - especially for so little money. But in 2009, the J38 is a “great digital camera option for the consumer on a budget who doesn’t want to sacrifice great quality or style for a lower price.”

Fujifilm is introducing two new entry-level A-Series digital cameras today. Both of the new models offer some pretty serious features and performance for cameras that will sell for under $100. The 10-megapixel Fujifilm A170 and 12-megapixel A220 both feature Fujifilm’s new SR Auto Mode (Automatic Scene Recognition), which automatically analyzes a scene and chooses the most appropriate of six scene modes. Both cameras have a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7-inch LCD, Face Detection, a VGA movie mode with sound, in-camera panorama stitching and use easy to find AA batteries.

Some items include an underwater housing, which can be used in depths up to 130 feet of water, for the FinePix F200EXR and an outdoor accessory kit for the FinePix Z33WP. One of the themes at PMA this year was waterproof point-and-shoot cameras. It seems the camera makers have all decided the time has come for underwater digital cameras. For the past few years, underwater point-and-shoot digital cameras have been the exclusive domain of Olympus and Pentax. Pentax got the ball rolling back in 2005 with their 5-megapixel OptioWP. Then Olympus introduced the Stylus 720 SW, which was shockproof as well as waterproof. Both companies have had several updates since they first started making underwater cameras and depth ratings have gone from 5 feet to over 30 feet. But until recently, there wasn’t any other competition (with the exception of Ricoh’s 10-megapixel G600, which isn’t readily available in the US). That has decidedly changed now, and the features and performance of waterproof cameras have matured as well. Underwater cameras used to be pretty basic point-and-shoots but the new models we saw at PMA are no-compromise, high-performance cameras that also happen to be waterproof.
