Nikon Coolpix S70 Pocket Camera With iPhone-style Touch Screen

Last night, Nikon announced a new iPhone-like point-and-shoot digital camera with a 3.5-inch touch-screen OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display. The new Nikon Coolpix S70 is a 12.1-megapixel camera with a 5x wide-angle zoom lens equipped with Nikon’s VR (Vibration Reduction) optical image stabilization system. The S70 comes in a variety of color/texture combinations and also features 720p HD video capture.

OLED technology has been around for a few years now, but it hasn’t made it into many digital cameras. The Coolpix S70’s Clear Color Display should be easier to see in bright light than a traditional LCD and colors should be better, too. It’s exciting to see Nikon using an OLED display - especially for a touch-screen camera. Notice the iPhone-like design of the S70’s large 3.5-inch Clear Color Display . The S70’s touch screen also behaves a bit like an iPhone in that you can scroll through photos by dragging a finger and zoom in and out by pinching or spreading images with two fingers. According to the press release you can also ” focus on and photograph a subject by simply touching it on the camera’s display.” That sounds like the S70 has the same or at least a very similar auto focus system as the new iPhone 3Gs.
