Digital SLRs
If, however, Mom’s a top-notch photog, nothing but a digital SLR will do.
DSLRs offer interchangeable lenses, speed, advanced features and the best possible image quality. Even entry-level digital SLRs have much better image quality and performance than compact digital cameras. Popular, reasonably-priced digital SLRs include the Nikon D60, Canon EOS Rebel XSi /450D, the Sony Alpha A350, Pentax K200D, Olympus E-620 and the Panasonic Lumix G1. These cameras range from about $60 to $1,000 and for a hundred dollars or so more you can usually buy them in a kit with one or two lenses. Canon and Nikon are the most popular brands. But moms with small hands might appreciate the diminutive Olympus E-620 and its tilt/swivel LCD display. Nikon and Canon have both recentyl introduced digital SLRs that can also capture video. If that’s something you think Mom would like, then you should take a look at the Nikon D90 and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i / 500D.

Waterproof & Shockproof Point-and-Shoot Digital Cameras
Does your family spend a lot of time around a swimming pool, at the beach, or canoeing or kayaking? How about giving Mom a waterproof camera, like the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000, Pentax Optio W60, Panasonic Lumix TS1 or the Canon PowerShot D10? The Panasonic, Canon and Olympus waterproof cameras are also shockproof, which means they’re also somewhat childproof and a good choice for moms with small kids. They’re built to survive juice spills and small drops on the playground.

Thanks for the excellent Mother’s Day gift guide, Patia. You did a much better job than I would have. All I can think of are cameras. I especially like the do-it-yourself gift ideas. For a lot of moms, those will probably be the best gifts. Of course, most of us guys will want to get our moms something techy we can play with. I’m planning to get my mom a digital picture frame and load it up with photos before I give it to her.

Thank YOU, Photo-John!
I think your mom will love the digital picture frame full of photos. That’s techy and also really fun and personal.
