Panasonic Lumix GH1 Video Intro

November 17th, 2009 by Photo-John

Panasonic Lumix GH1 Video Intro Panasonic announced the Lumix GH1 Micro Four Thirds camera this March at the annual PMA tradeshow. It was the biggest announcement of the show and a solid follow-up to the first Micro Four Thirds camera and last year’s camera of the year, the Panasonic Lumix G1. Like the G1, the GH1 is a “system” camera with changeable lenses and a 12-megapixel Four Thirds sensor. The GH1 is basically the same as the G1 as far as still shooting goes, but it adds 1080p HD video capture and a new silent auto focus, 10x image-stabilized kit lens. Although it looks a lot like a digital SLR the GH1 is smaller and has an EVF (electronic viewfinder) instead of an optical through-the-lens viewfinder.

Nikon D3S Video Preview

November 10th, 2009 by Photo-John

Nikon D3S Pro Digital SLR Here’s a second wacky camera intro from NYC photographer, Bob Scott. This one is for Nikon’s new 12-megapixel full-frame D3S professional digital SLR, which looks like it could be the new king of low light photography. Bob visited with Nikon and checked out the new D3S at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York a few weeks ago and then decided to make this video preview. It covers the basic features and specs of the camera and manages to be pretty entertaining at the same time.

Olympus E-P2 Hands-On Video Intro

November 9th, 2009 by Photo-John

Last week Olympus announced their second Micro Four Thirds Pen Digital camera, the E-P2. We got a little sneak peak at the E-P2 in the form of a pre-production camera that showed up about a week before the announcement. Since it wasn’t a finished camera we couldn’t shoot studio tests or evaluate the performance. But we did get to shoot product photos and make a hands-on video of the E-P2 so you could see some of the new features in action.

Canon PowerShot S90 Video Preview

October 30th, 2009 by Photo-John

Canon PowerShow S90 Compact Digital Camera The new Canon PowerShot S90 showed up at my door last week. The S-Series cameras have been missing from the Canon PowerShot lineup for a few years. Essentially, the S-Series offers G-Series image quality and performance in a pocket-sized package. Like previous S-Series PowerShot digital cameras, the Canon S90 has the same 10-megapixel sensor as its big brother, the G11. For people who want G11 image quality on the trail, in their pocket, in the briefcase or in their purse, it’s the camera to have.

Canon EOS 7D Sample Video And Experience

October 6th, 2009 by Photo-John

Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR With Video I was impressed enough with the pre-production Canon EOS 7D that Canon sent me a few weeks ago that I pre-ordered one from my local pro shop (Pictureline). Since I picked it up last week I’ve been hustling to put the auto focus and video mode through their paces. Based on the EOS 7D studio tests I shot with the pre-production camera Canon loaned me, I’d already decided the image quality was a solid improvement over the EOS 50D. So my main interests are seeing how much improvement they’ve made with the auto focus, and playing with the video.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Review

July 15th, 2009 by Photo-John

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera
The Canon EOS 5D Mark II is a 21.1-megapixel, full frame, professional-level digital SLR with 1080p HD video capture. It has pretty much all the bells and whistles you’d expect of a professional camera that sells for over $2,500, including a high-resolution 3-inch LCD display, Live View, and full manual exposure controls. For this review, Canon loaned us the EOS 5D Mark II kit, which includes the EF 24-105mm f/4L zoom lens as well as the camera body, cables, etc.

Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera

June 15th, 2009 by Photo-John

Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds Digital CameraToday, Olympus introduces their first Micro Four Thirds camera – the E-P1. The compact new Olympus E-P1 has a 12.3-megapixel sensor and it’s Olympus’ first changeable lens camera to offer a movie mode (720p HD). The Micro Four Thirds format was announced last August and since then I’ve been anxiously waiting to find out what Olympus would do with it. Panasonic has introduced two Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Lumix G1 and the GH1 with HD video. But until now, the only Micro Four Thirds action we’ve seen from Olympus was behind glass at tradeshows. But now there’s an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera we can bank on – and it’s not just a list of specs and features, either. I was lucky enough to get a pre-production E-P1 last week so I could get a feel for the camera, make my own product photos and shoot a hands-on video preview of the new Micro Four Thirds camera.

Clik Elite Medium Nature Camera Pack Video Review

June 12th, 2009 by Photo-John

Clik Elite Medium Nature Camera PackClik Elite was officially introduced to the world at the PMA tradeshow this spring. I was really impressed with the backapcks they had at the show. But I was even more impressed by their genuine interest in what outdoor, action sports photographers like me want. These guys are making the camera packs I’ve been wanting (and requesting) for years. The Clik Elite packs are built for photographers who actually spend time in the backcountry, with an eye for real backcountry needs - hydration, food and clothing storage, and good fit. I need a backpack that allows me to ride, ski or hike comfortably and safely and that can accommodate extra clothing, tools and food as well as my camera gear. Since the majority of my photography is done from skis or a mountain bike, I was anxious to get my hands on a pack to test.

Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Review

June 4th, 2009 by Photo-John

Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Waterproof Digital Camera
I’ve been using the Olympus Stylus 1050 SW for a few months now. It’s a 10-megapixel pocket-sized point-and-shoot that’s also waterproof and shockproof, making it a great outdoor camera. It was also the first digital camera to feature Tap Control, which allows you to access a few camera features simply by tapping on the camera. This is supposed to make the camera easier to use for people who are wearing gloves - snowboarders, skiers, cyclists, etc.
