Micro Four Thirds fans, listen up! The Olympus E-P2 digital camera has landed and Olympus sent me one to check out for a few days before they made the announcement! Its predecessor, the Olympus E-P1 was one of the surprise hits of the summer. The Olympus E-P2 is more or less the same camera as the E-P1 with a few important new features. The most obvious difference is the sexy new black finish. But it goes deeper than that. Most important is the new Accessory Port and included Articulating EVF (electronic viewfinder). The rest of changes are internal. They include auto focus tracking (yes - it works in Movie Mode, too!), manual exposure control in movie mode, two new Art Filters and a new Picture Mode.

Canon PowerShot S90 Video Preview
Photo-John
The new Canon PowerShot S90 showed up at my door last week. The S-Series cameras have been missing from the Canon PowerShot lineup for a few years. Essentially, the S-Series offers G-Series image quality and performance in a pocket-sized package. Like previous S-Series PowerShot digital cameras, the Canon S90 has the same 10-megapixel sensor as its big brother, the G11. For people who want G11 image quality on the trail, in their pocket, in the briefcase or in their purse, it’s the camera to have.

Canon EOS 7D Ghosting Problem
Photo-John
Yesterday there was a steady stream of blog posts and discussions on forums and social networking sites about a “ghosting” issue with the new Canon EOS 7D digital SLR. I’m not exactly sure who discovered the problem but I first saw it in a Twitter post linking to a British Journal Of Photography news post (read the BJP post). The gist of the problem is that when you use the camera in burst mode, subtle remnants of a previous image can end up in the subsequent frame. Canon has acknowledged the problem and say they’re working on a firmware fix.

Nikon D3S vs. Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
Photo-John
These two powerhouse pro digital SLRs were announced within a week of each other. They both cost about $5000, both have HD video, fast capture rates and a ridiculously high ISO 102,400 sensitivity. It’s impossible not to wonder which one is the better camera. So I thought it would worth the effort to, as closely as possible, do a back-to-back comparison of the Nikon D3S and. the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV.

Photo-John
Canon is calling their latest EOS-1D digital SLR the “ultimate multimedia imaging solution.” The new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV has a 16.1-megapixel APS-H (1.3x crop factor) CMOS sensor and captures full-resolution RAW images at 10 frames per second and 1080p video at 30, 24 or 25 frames per second. The new 1D has a standard maximum sensitivity of ISO 12,800, expandable to ISO 102,400. Most important to the sports photographers and photojournalists who make their living with the 1D series, the new EOS-1D Mark IV has an improved 45-point auto focus system that increases the number of ultra-sensitive cross-type AF sensor points from 19 to 39, and has “significantly improved” AI Servo II predictive auto focus programming.

Canon EOS 7D Firmware Update - Version 1.0.9
Photo-John
Canon announced a firmware update for the EOS 7D today. The firmware changes improve Live View auto focus, address video color problems and fix a flash-related shutter release problem. I’ve been using the 7D for a few weeks now and to the best of my knowledge I haven’t experienced any of the problems this firmware update addresses. So I’ll probably wait for the next firmware update. But if you’ve experienced any of the problems listed above or you just like to have the latest firmware, it can be downloaded from the Canon Web site.

New Nikon AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85mm VR - Compact Macro Lens
Photo-John
Along with the new D3S digital SLR announced on Tuesday, Nikon also introduced a new DX-format macro lens. The Nikon AF-S DX 85mm f/3.5 Micro Nikkor VR II lens is designed to be used with APS-C sensor Nikon digital SLRs like the D5000, D60, D300s and D3000. The 85mm focal length is effectively converted to 127.5mm (35mm equivalent) on a DX-format camera body. The “Micro” in the name means it’s designed for close-up photography. In this case, that means a minimum focus distance of 9 inches and a 1:1, life-size reproduction ratio.

Nikon D3S - New Low Light King
Photo-John
Nikon has upped the DSLR ante again. The new Nikon D3S has a 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor just like its predecessor the D3. But the maximum sensitivity on the D3S has been increased to a mind-boggling ISO 102,400 and noise levels have been lowered at all sensitivity settings. If being able to shoot in the dark isn’t enough for you, the D3S also adds 720p video capture with the ability to auto focus while filming. And the D3S now has sensor cleaning - a very important feature that didn’t make it into the original D3 spec.
