Sony Alpha SLT-A57 Replaces Award-Winning A55

Sony Alpha SLT-A57 Replaces Award-Winning A55Sony has replaced the SLT-A55, our 2010 Camera of the Year (Sony Alpha SLT-A55 review), with the new Alpha SLT-A57. Designed for entry-level and enthusiast DSLR shoppers, the main updates on the A57 are a new body, updated Sony Bionz processing, updated AVCHD video, improved tracking auto focus, a faster burst rate and some new shooting modes and effects. To some extent, the A57 is a warmed-over version of the A55. The 15-point auto focus system looks like the same one used in the A55 and the new body is the same as the A65. The resolution is also the same as the A55, although the 16-megapixel sensor is the same used in the NEX-5N, which showed a stop of improvement in high ISO image quality (read our Sony NEX-5N review).

Sony Alpha NEX-5N Review

Sony Alpha NEX-5N ReviewThe Sony Alpha NEX-5N is version 2.5 of Sony’s NEX compact mirrorless camera system. Sony introduced their NEX mirrorless camera line in 2009 and updated it with a new entry level model, the NEX-C3 in the spring of 2011. The 16-megapixel NEX-5N was introduced in late 2011 with a new 16-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, improved auto focus, and improved AVCHD video. The camera body is very small, with a 3-inch tilting rear LCD display. It has a full range of shooting modes, including full manual for experienced photographers and iAuto and scene modes for point-and-shooters. I first saw it at the 2011 PhotoPlus Expo and asked Sony to send me one for review ASAP. They sent me the basic NEX-5N kit, which includes their 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS zoom lens. I also requested a longer lens for landscape and sports photos so they also included the 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 telephoto zoom lens.

Sony Cybershot TX200V – 18MP Waterproof Point-And-Shoot Camera

Sony Cybershot TX200V – 18MP Waterproof Point-And-Shoot CameraSony has upped the ante in the outdoor camera game with the announcement of the $500, 18-megapixel Cybershot DSC-TX200V waterproof point-and-shoot. I believe that’s $100 more than any previous waterproof point-and-shoot camera and Sony says the new 18-megapixel CMOS sensor is the “highest-resolution currently offered in the ‘point and shoot’ market.” The TX200V also has an interesting new “glass design.” In the product shots provided by Sony, it looks like instead of metal or plastic, the whole front of the camera is covered with a single piece of glass. Camera control is via an extra-wide, 3.3-inch OLED touchscreen display. And of course, the TX200V also has full HD video (1920×1080/60i) along with Sony’s “Optical Steady Shot Active Mode,” to … wait for it … keep things smooth while you’re on the move. I’m going to have to trademark that!

2011 Camera Of The Year – Sony Alpha NEX-7

Last year’s camera of the year was pretty obvious to me from early on. And it was the same this year. I took my time, let things settle and took a closer look at the other contenders to make sure I wasn’t missing something. There were four cameras in the running for me – the Sony NEX-7, the Sony Alpha SLT-A77, the Olympus E-P3 and the new Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system. But in the end, I had to go with my original gut decision. The 2011 Camera of the Year is the Sony Alpha NEX-7 compact system camera. The NEX-7 is unique in that it offers true professional-level digital SLR features, build and performance in a mirrorless camera body. That’s been said before about other compact system cameras but the NEX-7 raises the bar a few notches with a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, excellent electronic viewfinder, 3-inch tilting LCD display, high-speed AVCHD video, customizable exposure control dials and 10 frames per second high-speed burst. And then there’s Sony’s new LA-EA2 transparent mirror adapter, which pushes the NEX-7 over the edge by giving it phase detect AF for DSLR continuous auto focus performance. No one has done that before.

Sony Alpha NEX-7 – Featured User Review

Sony Alpha NEX-7 – Featured User ReviewThe Sony Alpha NEX-7 is Sony’s top-of-the-line interchangeable lens mirrorless camera and this is our first user review for the NEX-7. It was written by community member Greg McCary, one of my favorite photographers on the site and a man who knows his cameras. Greg owns Olympus, Leica and Sony cameras and he’s a very experienced photographer, so his opinions carry a lot of weight. I’ve been anxiously waiting for him to get his NEX-7 so he could write a review and I am pleased to give it some extra attention by making it a Featured User Review.

If you own the NEX-7 or another Sony camera, please write a review so other photographers can benefit from your experience. User reviews are the foundation of PhotographyREVIEW.com and we need your reviews!

Sony NEX-5N Hands-On Video Preview

Sony NEX-5N Hands-On Video PreviewThe Sony NEX-5N is a 16-megapixel mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera with full HD video and a 3-inch touchscreen display. I’m working on a complete Sony NEX-5N camera review and it should be done soon. But I’ve already completed a short hands-on video review of the NEX-5N. So if you can’t wait for the full review, you can watch the video now to get a quick peek at some of the camera’s features in action and to hear my initial thoughts on its performance. If you haven’t been paying much attention to the new compact system cameras, you should definitely watch this video.

Sony NEX-5N Studio Sample Photos

Sony NEX-5N Studio Sample PhotosThe Sony Alpha NEX-5N is a compact system camera with a 16-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. We shot controlled studio tests at all ISO settings with the NEX-5N and the Sony 18-55mm kit lens. The sample photos were shot RAW in aperture priority mode at f/8. They were converted to 16-bit TIFF files with Lightroom and the graybar, text and logo were added in Photoshop before they were resaved as maximum quality JPEGs. The images have been posted at their original resolution and no noise reduction or other adjustments have been made.

Sony NEX-5N – First Impressions

Sony NEX-5N - First ImpressionsSince their introduction in spring of 2010, the Sony Alpha NEX mirrorless cameras have become very popular with both serious photographers who want a high-performance compact camera, and casual photographers who like the smaller size and ease-of-use. I hadn’t seen the latest NEX cameras in person so I made it a point to take a closer look at the NEX line at the PhotoPlus Expo a couple of weeks ago. Right now the Sony NEX-5N is the sweet spot in the NEX lineup, offering the most performance for the money. They’ve bumped the resolution to 16-megapixels, improved the auto focus and speed, enhanced the video performance, and added a 3-inch touchscreen LCD display. For more information on the NEX-5N’s features and specs, please read our Sony NEX-5N announcement article. Since this was my first opportunity to actually play with the 5N, I want to focus this article on the camera’s feel and performance.
