Kodak is discontinuing production of their iconic Kodachrome slide film. Kodachrome is, without a doubt, one of the best known and most used film-types in history. With an absolutely recognizable look, it defined color photography in the sixties and seventies and I’d be willing to bet it was used for more National Geographic photos than any other color film. However, digital cameras, new film technology and the technical difficulty of processing Kodachrome have made it less and less popular.

Today, Olympus introduces their first Micro Four Thirds camera – the E-P1. The compact new Olympus E-P1 has a 12.3-megapixel sensor and it’s Olympus’ first changeable lens camera to offer a movie mode (720p HD). The Micro Four Thirds format was announced last August and since then I’ve been anxiously waiting to find out what Olympus would do with it. Panasonic has introduced two Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Lumix G1 and the GH1 with HD video. But until now, the only Micro Four Thirds action we’ve seen from Olympus was behind glass at tradeshows. But now there’s an Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera we can bank on – and it’s not just a list of specs and features, either. I was lucky enough to get a pre-production E-P1 last week so I could get a feel for the camera, make my own product photos and shoot a hands-on video preview of the new Micro Four Thirds camera.

Clik Elite was officially introduced to the world at the PMA tradeshow this spring. I was really impressed with the backapcks they had at the show. But I was even more impressed by their genuine interest in what outdoor, action sports photographers like me want. These guys are making the camera packs I’ve been wanting (and requesting) for years. The Clik Elite packs are built for photographers who actually spend time in the backcountry, with an eye for real backcountry needs - hydration, food and clothing storage, and good fit. I need a backpack that allows me to ride, ski or hike comfortably and safely and that can accommodate extra clothing, tools and food as well as my camera gear. Since the majority of my photography is done from skis or a mountain bike, I was anxious to get my hands on a pack to test.

I’ve been using the Olympus Stylus 1050 SW for a few months now. It’s a 10-megapixel pocket-sized point-and-shoot that’s also waterproof and shockproof, making it a great outdoor camera. It was also the first digital camera to feature Tap Control, which allows you to access a few camera features simply by tapping on the camera. This is supposed to make the camera easier to use for people who are wearing gloves - snowboarders, skiers, cyclists, etc.
Want to buy an Olympus Stylus 1050 SW?
Compare prices and shop for a Olympus Stylus 1050 SW digital camera >>

Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Pros
- Waterproof and nearly indestructible
- Pocket-sized
- Live histogram
- Panoramic mode (requires Olympus xD card)
- Tap Control really works!
|
Olympus Stylus 1050 SW Cons
- Sliding cover too easy to open accidentally
- Tap Control doesn’t access most useful controls
- Batteries lose power too quickly in the cold
- Image quality isn’t as good as some other 10-megapixel cameras
- 38mm wide-angle isn’t really very wide
- No mechanical image stabilization
- No optical viewfinder
- xD memory cards only work with Olympus and Fujifilm compact digital cameras

Nikon launched their second VSLR (video DSLR) attack a few weeks ago with the announcement of the 12-megapixel, 720p HD D5000. A D5000 review camera arrived on our doorstep this week and this preview is based on what we’ve learned from that camera. The Nikon D5000 has the same sensor as the D90 with a simplified set of controls. The standout feature on the new camera is the new 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD display - the first tilt-swivel LCD on a Nikon digital SLR. This isn’t a perfect analogy, but the new D5000 is sort of like D60 with a Vari-angle LCD and a D90 sensor. The suggested retail price is $730 without a lens and $850 in a kit with the AF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G VR Nikkor lens.

Alan Davis and I have mountain biked together, taken pictures together and worked for each other - me as a freelance photographer and writer when he was editor of the now defunct Mountain Biking magazine; and Alan contributed a pro review for the Lowepro Primus AW camera backpack to this site. We see each other a few times a year at mountain bike races and tradeshows and connect regularly via the magic of the Internet and cell phones. One of our regular meetings is the annual Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. It’s sort of the season-opener for the North America cycling community. It’s also one of the first events of the year where all the cycling photographers get to check in with each other, hang out, compare notes, and talk some sh**. This year I asked Alan if he’d like to share some of the reality of covering an event like the Sea Otter Classic. My mini-interview with photographer Alan Davis follows…

The Sea Otter Classic is an annual bike festival held at world famous Laguna Seca Raceway outside Monterey, California. It takes place every spring and has all kinds of mountain bike and roadracing events as well as bicycle and accessory manufacturer displays. I thought it would be cool to give you a quick inside view of the event through the eyes of a professional photographer…
