Canon PowerShot G1 X Video Review

Canon PowerShot G1 X Video ReviewI was really excited about the14-megapixel Canon PowerShot G1 X when Canon announced it. The big, new 1.5-inch sensor puts it up against compact system (mirrorless) cameras as far as image quality goes and really puts it in a class of its own compared to other compact digital cameras. I got Canon to send me a G1 X for a few weeks and shot all kinds of stuff with it – mountain biking, snowshoeing, landscapes, etc.; and the sensor is really impressive, absolutely producing digital SLR image quality. The G1 X isn’t perfect, though. Ultimately, I ended up with mixed feelings about it, in spite of the excellent image quality. For more details, check out my hands-on video review and the sample photos below.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Metering Problem Acknowledged

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Metering Problem AcknowledgedOver the past couple of weeks, reports started to appear on the Internet about light leaks with Canon’s new EOS 5D Mark III full frame digital SLR. Canon has confirmed that there’s a problem in an official “product advisory.” Apparently, the problem happens when you use the top panel LCD display illumination in very low light. Canon says that the problem is actually a metering issue and not a light leak and they are working on a solution. Since it only occurs in very low light when the top panel is illuminated during an exposure, it’s not going to affect many photographers. In fact, it seems the problem could be avoided altogether by not making exposures while the top LCD panel light is on. In any case, the problem has been acknowledged and Canon says they are working on a fix.

What’s In Your Camera Bag – Bret Edge – Moab Landscape Photographer

What’s In Your Camera Bag – Bret Edge – Moab Landscape PhotographerI had recently had the pleasure of meeting landscape and outdoor photographer, Bret Edge. Bret lives in Moab, Utah, where he guides people in the local mountains, on the slickrock and in the plentiful slot canyons. He has a fine art landscape gallery in downtown Moab and does photography workshops as well. I thought he’d be a great subject for our first real “What’s In Your Camera Bag” video, since he’s an established photographer who works in one of the most dramatic and challenging environments in the world and has to consider survival as well as what camera gear to carry. To make this video, Bret picked me up before dawn and we made the 45-minute drive from Moab to Dead Horse Point, where I filmed him in action and then had him show us what he carries in his F-Stop Tilopa BC camera pack when he’s out in the field.

Canon EOS 60Da Astrophotography Digital SLR

Canon EOS 60Da Astrophotography Digital SLRStargazers, Canon wants to sell you a new camera! The 18-megapixel Canon EOS 60Da (the “a” stands for “astrophotography”) is a modified EOS 60D digital SLR (announced Aug., 2010) with a new infrared filter that allows more infrared light through for better Hydrogen Alpha wavelength transmission. Canon says the 60Da has, “20-percent higher transmittance of Hydrogen Alpha line, or Hα wavelength, allowing astronomers to capture crisp, clear images of reddish, diffuse nebulae.” The rest of the camera is pretty much the same as the standard EOS 60D. It has a proven 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor; a high-resolution 3-inch tilt-swivel LCD display, which makes the camera comfortable to use when mounted on a tripod or telescope; and full HD video, which you can view live through a TV set via the included AV cable.

Nikon D800 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark III Hands-On Video Intro

Nikon D800 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark III Hands-On Video IntroLike everyone else out there, I’ve been anxious to get my hands on the Nikon D800 and Canon EOS 5D Mark III, the latest and greatest full-frame professional digital SLRs. Instead of waiting to get official review cameras from Nikon and Canon, I went straight to my local pro shop, Pictureline, and had their man, Nick Gilson, do a hands-on intro and comparison for me. I do plan to do full pro reviews for both cameras. But for those of you who want to see them and learn more about them right now, the video below should do the trick. I’m also assembling some first impressions material to add to this page, including high-res sample photos that you can compare back-to-back.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Studio Sample Photos

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Studio Sample PhotosThe Canon EOS 5D Mark III was one of the most anxiously anticipated cameras in recent history (maybe ever) and there’s been a lot of hype about the image quality. In an effort to get our studio tests done as soon as possible, we borrowed a camera last night from local pro dealer, Pictureline. Based on these sample photos and some other quick field tests I made, I think the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is useable up to a very impressive ISO 12,800. Noise and detail is even pretty decent at ISO 25,600. The 5D Mark III will make handheld shooting in low light and high-speed shooting in a wide variety of conditions much easier than it was with previous cameras. Kudos to Canon for reigning in the urge to increase camera resolution. In my opinion, the 22.3-megapixel sensor has more than enough pixels and the improved low light performance is way more valuable for most photographers.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Studio Sample Photos

Canon PowerShot G1 X Studio Sample PhotosOur Canon PowerShot G1 X studio sample photos are complete and available for perusal. The image quality of this camera is amazing! I’ve been critical of Canon’s high-end G-Series compact cameras for the past couple of generations because I thought the image quality wasn’t good enough to make up for their chunky bodies. But I’ve got no criticism about the image quality of the new Canon PowerShot G1 X. The G1 X’s image quality is almost on par with APS-C sensor digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras. The key to the G1 X’s excellent image quality is a large new 1.5-inch 14.3-megapixel CMOS sensor. It’s actually bigger than the sensors Olympus and Panasonic use in their Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras. Thanks to the large sensor, the G1 X RAW files deliver DSLR-like image quality, with very low noise at high ISO settings and none of the highlight clipping that you get in most compact digital cameras photos. I used it right up to ISO 3200 and even photos I pushed hard in post-processing look great. I compared the G1 X studio samples below to our Nikon D7000 and Sony NEX-5N studio samples and the noise is only marginally higher.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III – Better AF, Better Image Quality & Better Video

Canon EOS 5D Mark III – Better AF, Better Image Quality & Better VideoThe Canon EOS 5D Mark III is official! This has to be one of Canon’s most anticipated cameras, ever. It’s been three and a half years since the 5D Mk II was announced (September, 2008) and photographers have been (im)patiently expecting a replacement since late 2009. It’s been quite a wait but I think Canon shooters are going to be very happy with 5D Mark III. The announcement was timed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Canon’s EOS System and it looks like almost every bit of the 5D Mark III has been improved. Rather than increase resolution, like Nikon did with the D800, Canon kept the resolution about the same and instead improved the image quality. The improved sensor and DIGIC 5+ image processor allowed them to improve video and JPEG image quality by about two stops, increase the burst rate to 6 frames per second and match the 1D X’s video features and performance. One of the biggest complaints about the 5D Mk II – poor auto focus – has been addressed, too. The EOS 5D Mark III gets the exact same 61-point auto focus system as the EOS 1D X. In my opinion, that new auto focus system is 5D Mark III’s most important feature upgrade. Canon also announced some new accessories with the EOS 5D Mark III. There’s a new battery grip, a new GPS receiver, a wireless transmitter, and best of all – a new wireless radio-triggered flash and flash transmitter.

Canon EOS-1D X Delayed Until April

Canon EOS-1D X Delayed Until AprilCanon has announced that their EOS-1D X professional digital SLR, announced last fall, will be delayed until “the end of April 2012.” Originally, availability was projected for March 2012, so that it would be ready ahead of the upcoming London Olympics. Like other big camera makers the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Southeast Asia disrupted Canon’s camera production. It’s also possible they’re having other challenges with the 1D X, although the official announcement is very brief and doesn’t say anything other than the camera has been delayed.

Canon PowerShot S100 – Featured User Review

Canon PowerShot S100 - Featured User ReviewThe Canon PowerShot S100 is one of the top high-end compact cameras right now and probably the best current camera that actually fits in your pocket. The S100 is especially good for serious photographers who want a pocket camera that provides excellent image quality and lots of control. I first got to see it in person at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York last fall and I really liked what I saw (Canon PowerShot S100 hands-on article). Because it’s such a sweet pocket camera, I was pleased when Thien posted his S100 user review. It’s a good review and it gives me a chance to highlight a really nice camera.

Canon PowerShot S100 owners, please write your own reviews. User reviews by photographers just like you are the foundation of this site and help people make important camera-buying decisions. So please take a few minutes to write a review for your camera, lens or other photo gear.
