Canon EOS 7D Teaser

September 5th, 2008 by Photo-John

CanonThis article was originally published on September 5th of 2008. It was speculating about what we now know as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. And now, one year later, the actual Canon EOS 7D has been announced. To read the real Canon EOS 7D announcement, click here. And check back soon for a full review. I got an early release EOS 7D today and I’ll be testing it and doing a quick turnaround review - I’m shooting for September 15th as a publishing date.

A lot of photographers have been waiting well over a year for a replacement for the revered Canon EOS 5D full-frame digital SLR. Canon’s recent APS-C sensor EOS 50D announcement made people wonder whether there was actually going to be a 5D replacement. But the EOS 5D is too popular with wedding, portrait, and other pro photographers for Canon to ignore. And being the oldest in the Canon DSLR line, the time has come for an upgrade. So I’ve been keeping the faith and preaching the word about a 5D replacement. And today some little bits of info appeared on the Web that make it look like Canon is going to give the EOS 5D faithful what they want.

There’s a new page on the Canon Web site today with the silhouette of an SLR and the cryptic text, “Destined Evolution.” French camera dealer site, Muller Photo Service, has a page up for a “Canon EOS 7D.” The price is listed at 2990 Euros, which converts to about $4260 US dollars at today’s exchange rate. Neither page has any technical info and when you click on the photo on the Muller Photo Service Page, it opens a new window with a photo of the EOS 5D. But these two teasers appear to confirm that Canon will be introducing the long-awaited EOS 5D replacement at Photokina, on September 23rd. We’ll have to wait to see for sure. But I’m about 99.9% confident now that photographers who’ve been holding out for a full-frame DSLR replacement for the Canon EOS 5D will be rewarded for their patience.

Thanks to PhotographyREVIEW.com member Kajuah, for posting the Muller Photo Service link on our Canon forum. Stay tuned for more info. I can’t personally confirm that there will be a new Canon EOS 7D. Canon is always very tight with information on new models and I almost never know anything until the official announcements are made. But there is enough information out right now that I feel confident in posting this story. We’ll post a full write-up, photos, and specs as soon as Canon announces the new camera!
