Rumors about the Canon EOS 7D have been bouncing around the Web for quite a while. The speculation can stop now - the announcement has been made. Surveying the features, specs and build, the new EOS 7D is sort of cross between the EOS 50D, 5D and EOS-1D lines. It has an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with expanded sensitivity to ISO 12,800. It’s faster than its predecessor, the EOS 50D, with an 8 frames per second capture rate. And yes - it captures video - full 1080p HD at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second.

The Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR is one of the most recent introductions to the pocket superzoom camera category, as well one of the more interesting. Besides the 10x 27-270mm wide-angle zoom lens, the F70EXR also feature’s Fujifilm’s unique, new EXR sensor, which was designed to deliver great low-light image quality. The F70EXR was only announced a few weeks ago so I was pleased to see a user review appear so soon - especially such a positive and detailed review.

Olympus is describing the E-600 as sort of a “little brother” to the E-620 that was announced this spring. The latest full frame DSLR from Sony is a 24.6 megapixel entry that is charted to sell for less the $2000!

Sony uses their EXMOOR CMOS sensor and dual image processing engines to produce fine quality high resolution output. The sensor is designed with wide angle lenses and high precision units from the Sony alpha line. The dual engine implementation allows for a greater amount of effective noise reduction when shooting with higher ISO settings.

Sony adds two new cameras to their Alpha digital SLR line today. The new Sony Alpha DSLR-A550 is a 14.2-megapixel camera and the Alpha DSLR-A500 is a 12.3-megapixel camera. Both use brand new Sony Exmor CMOS imaging sensors, which are supposed to deliver better image quality at sensitivity settings up to ISO 12,800. The new Alpha A550 and A500 also offer in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR), combining multiple images to create one with a wider tonal range - even without a tripod. The new cameras also have improved Live View functions and new 3-inch, tilting Live View LCD displays.

A whole bunch of new waterproof and shockproof digital cameras have become available since the spring of 2008, when this guide was originally published. I decided to update the article so it refers to the most current (as of August 2009) outdoor-friendly point-and-shoot digital cameras. These are cameras that have some level of moisture resistance and/or can take some physical abuse - cameras made for the beach, camping, fishing, skiing, etc. Right now Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, and Ricoh all offer at least one camera that fits somewhere in the waterproof, shockproof, outdoor point-and-shoot spectrum.
