Datacolor SpyderCube Review

May 29th, 2009 by Photo-John

Datacolor SpyderCube It’s small and unassuming, but Datacolor’s SpyderCube was one of the coolest things I saw at PMA this year. It looks like a small toy - a photographer’s dradle, maybe. But the SpyderCube is actually a sophisticated white balance and exposure tool. I wanted one as soon as I saw it. It’s small enough to keep in any camera bag and it makes a real difference in the quality of your final images. Shoot a RAW photo of it in any kind of lighting and you’re pretty much guaranteed accurate color and exposure with minimal post-processing.

Nikon D90 Review

May 26th, 2009 by calanan

Nikon D90 Digital SLR camera
The Nikon D90 is Nikon’s latest mid-range digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera and the world’s first DSLR to offer high-definition video capture. The D90’s 12-megapixel APS-sized CMOS sensor also ups the high-ISO ante with very low noise up to - and in some situations, beyond - ISO 800.

Pentax K7 Digital SLR Announced

May 20th, 2009 by Photo-John

New Pentax K7 Digital SLR It’s been over a year since Pentax introduced the K20D, their current top-of-the-line digital SLR body. Even though they did make a lot of announcements in 2008, my impression has been that things have been a little on the quiet side for Pentax in the past year. They need something big to bring the buzz back. The new 14.6-megapixel Pentax K7 DSLR should do that. Pentax system owners should be very happy and other digital SLR owners might be a little jealous. It may have taken a while for Pentax to produce a new camera. But in July, $1299 will buy you a whole lot of Pentax-badged digital SLR. And yeah - it’s got video.

Nikon D5000 HD Video DSLR Preview

May 16th, 2009 by Photo-John

Nikon launched their second VSLR (video DSLR) attack a few weeks ago with the announcement of the 12-megapixel, 720p HD D5000. A D5000 review camera arrived on our doorstep this week and this preview is based on what we’ve learned from that camera. The Nikon D5000 has the same sensor as the D90 with a simplified set of controls. The standout feature on the new camera is the new 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD display - the first tilt-swivel LCD on a Nikon digital SLR. This isn’t a perfect analogy, but the new D5000 is sort of like D60 with a Vari-angle LCD and a D90 sensor. The suggested retail price is $730 without a lens and $850 in a kit with the AF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6G VR Nikkor lens.

Photographer Alan Davis At Sea Otter Classic

May 12th, 2009 by Photo-John

Photographer Alan Davis Alan Davis and I have mountain biked together, taken pictures together and worked for each other - me as a freelance photographer and writer when he was editor of the now defunct Mountain Biking magazine; and Alan contributed a pro review for the Lowepro Primus AW camera backpack to this site. We see each other a few times a year at mountain bike races and tradeshows and connect regularly via the magic of the Internet and cell phones. One of our regular meetings is the annual Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. It’s sort of the season-opener for the North America cycling community. It’s also one of the first events of the year where all the cycling photographers get to check in with each other, hang out, compare notes, and talk some sh**. This year I asked Alan if he’d like to share some of the reality of covering an event like the Sea Otter Classic. My mini-interview with photographer Alan Davis follows…
