X-Rite’s ColorMunki line was announced at PMA this spring. A novel design, combined screen and printer calibration, and an affordable $500 price point is plenty to get attention with. I’ve used spectrophotometers to calibrate my computer monitor before and I personally found them to be boring, though essential devices. Sure, I want the photo on my screen to match what I print and save me time, paper, and printer ink. But if only the calibration process wasn’t so tedious! So I was excited to find out that the ColorMunki Photo offers more - the color accuracy that photographers need as well as creative tools for sampling and experimenting with color in new ways. Olympus Imaging America of Center Valley, Pennsylvania announced December 9, 2008 that the cameras known as Stylus SW will become known as Stylus Tough.

Spring 2009 will bring expansion and new products to the line that will be referred to as Tough beginning  January 2009. The increasing desire among consumers according to Olympus for such products has made this move important for their ability to add new features and durability to the already popular rugged cameras they produce.

Pentax has announced a new K2000 DSLR kit. They’re going out on a limb here and breaking some rules with a white body instead of the usual tough-guy black or techy silver. If it were available right now, I’d be obligated to call it the White Christmas Special. Unfortunately, I’m denied that opportunity since it won’t actually be in stores until February.

Adobe has announced a new update for Lightroom. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.2 adds RAW support for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon PowerShot G10, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, Leica D-LUX 4, Panasonic DMC-G1, Panasonic DMC-FX150, and the Panasonic DMC-FZ28. Camera Profiles have been added to the Calibration window in the Develop module. The update also addresses some Lightroom 2 bugs, including:

• Improved launch speed for Catalogs with hundreds of top-level folders
• Improved performance of Graduated Filter and Brush tools
• Removed Print Sharpening edge artifact problems
• Increased number of characters allowed for Web gallery labels
• Addressed image quality issues with Slideshow export
