New Tamron 14-150mm f/3.5-5.8 VC Lens For Micro Four Thirds Cameras

Lenses Mirrorless News Tamron

Tamron announced a new zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras this week at the CP+ tradeshow in Japan. The Tamron 14-150mm F/3.5-5.8 Di III VC zoom lens will be their first for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 14-150mm focal length is effectively converted to 28-300mm with the 2x Micro Four Thirds conversion factor and the lens is equipped with Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization system to compensate for camera shake. Tamron says the optics deliver “leading-edge high image quality by thoroughly compensating for aberrations.” The lens also has a 7-bladed circular aperture diaphragm for natural bokeh.

  • Minimium aperture: f/22

Olympus makes a 14-150mm f/4-5.6 zoom and Panasonic makes a 14-140mm f/4-5.8 lens zoom so the new Tamron doesn’t fill a real gap in the Micro Four Thirds lens market. At f/3.5 at the wide end, it is a little faster than the Panasonic and Olympus lenses. But I don’t think half a stop is compelling enough to get people to choose the Tamron over the manufacturer lenses. No price has been announced yet but I’m guessing that will be the main selling point. The Panasonic lens is currently selling for over $600 and the Olympus lens for just under $600. If the Tamron 14-150mm F/3.5-5.8 Di III VC ends up being priced between $400 and $500, it should be a good competitor.
